RomUniverse must permanently destroy all pirated copies of Nintendo games
A US judge has ordered the owner of RomUniverse, a website where people could illegally download Nintendo games, to permanently destroy all of his “unauthorized copies” of such games.
The owner of the RomUniverse website, which has already been taken offline, must destroy all pirated copies of Nintendo’s intellectual property, including games, books, movies and music, by August 17. By August 20, the rom site owner must make a statement that he ‘meets these conditions’, under penalty of perjury. That’s according to court documents Torrent Freak has obtained.
Nintendo first sued RomUniverse in 2019 and the Japanese gaming giant won that lawsuit in May this year, writes Ars Technica. With that, Nintendo was awarded $2.1 million in damages, to be paid by the owner of RomUniverse in installments, with a monthly fee of $50.
At the end of June, Nintendo went to court again because the RomUniverse owner did not make his first payments of $ 50, also reports Torrent Freak. In addition, Nintendo requested a permanent injunction on the website from the court, fearing that the owner would put RomUniverse back online. Such an injunction is a court order that a person takes certain actions or refrains from certain activities. Following this request, the judge ruled that the injunction should be granted and that the rom site owner must destroy all of its illegal copies of Nintendo property.
