PC Tools, known for its Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic and PC Tools Antivirus programs, recently released a new version of Threatfire. This program is intended to protect the computer against viruses, spyware and identity theft. However, it is not intended to be a standalone product, but to complement existing protection of an antivirus and firewall software. It monitors certain behavioral patterns, such as keyboard strokes, for example, and thus offers protection against spyware, adware, keyloggers, viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, buffer overflows and other forms of malware. Threatfire is available in a free and a paid version, with the latter for fifteen dollars including as extras an antivirus scanner with updates and real-time protection against malware. What’s new in this release

• ThreatFire is now be recognized in the Microsoft Security Center as an approved antivirus.
• New language options in Settings: English/German versions. (Additional languages ​​will be added over time.)
• Updated antivirus engine from 4.4.2 to 4.4.5.
• Dynamic AV Database updates. AV Database updates are no longer tied to the product update mechanism. Instead, database updates will be handled in the same way as other ThreatFire program database updates and will happen automatically in the background on regularly scheduled intervals (assuming automatic updates is on).
• Animated Tray Icon. Animation (flickering flame) during scan and quarantine. Tooltip during animation provides additional information.
• New product update and breaking news bulletin notices, both of which can be turned On or Off in Settings.
• New malware rules.
• New/Updated Help file.
• Miscellaneous fixes for the following (most of these were mentioned in the ThreatFire forum: schedule a scan settings, blank alerts at slider Protection Level 4, periodically unable to sign in to eBay and Hotmail, fix for viewing at 120 DPI.
• Improved malware detection.
• Fewer false positives.
• Miscellaneous other program fixes.
