Mike Ybarra, vice president of the Xbox division at Microsoft, has revealed that it won’t be long until players can gift each other Xbox games. He did not mention any specific schedule.

Ybarra made the statement in response to a Twitter user’s question. He asked, “How far are we from gifting a new purchase to a friend?” thereupon replied Ybarra: “Not far.” The Microsoft CEO has not shared further details, making a better estimate difficult to make. The ability to buy one game for another has long been a popular wish among Xbox users.

Competitor Sony has so far not made it possible on the PlayStation to make a purchase for another person. The feature already exists on Steam, which according to the latest figures has 67 million monthly active users. Blizzard also currently makes it possible to buy games and items for others via Battle.net.
