AMD has started selling the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition. The card, which is not intended for gamers, has a score comparable to that of an Nvidia GTX 1080 according to a user test in 3DMark.

User #define shows his results in comments on website Wccftech. VideoCardz collected the scores and photos of the setup. The owner of the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition tested the card in combination with an Intel Core i7-4790K processor. Although that is an older CPU, it probably has little influence on 3DMark’s GPU score.

The average GPU score over twelve runs in 3DMark Fire Strike was about 22,000 points according to #define and its published screenshots. The Founders Edition of the GTX 1080 scores about 21,000 points in the same test and modified versions from manufacturers slightly higher. The Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti is a lot faster with about 27,500 points. The latest Radeon drivers were used for the benchmarks. Furthermore, #define notes that the bios is from June 16, which seems like AMD released the card as soon as possible after finishing the bios.

There are no reviews of the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition published. AMD has also not made review copies available to websites. The first experiences that are now coming online come from people who have purchased the card themselves. The first Vega GPU has been available for a limited time since June 27 and the price has been converted with VAT to about 1071 euros. The card cannot be found in web shops in the Benelux. Copies were sold in the US and UK, but they seem to be out of stock in most places.

AMD previously emphasized that the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is not intended for gamers. The map is aimed at scientists, engineers and designers. The model has the full Vega GPU with 64 compute units and is equipped with 16GB hbm2. At the end of July, the RX Vega video cards for gamers will be announced at the Siggraph fair. The RX variants may perform better through driver optimization.
