The Utrecht based Spranq has made a new version of the ink-saving font Ecofont available. The font can be used from this page for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows and takes up 228 kilobytes of disk space as a truetype font. Ecofont is based on the open source Bitstream Verafonts and has been tweaked to save up to 20% ink compared to other fonts, according to Spranq. Every letter and number from Ecofont has small round cut-outs that are barely or not visible at first glance, but because of these cut-outs require less ink when printed:

The saving of the Ecofont is based on research in which the average black area per character has been compared with that of the source file, the Bitstream Vera (cf. Verdana). Through software research, we arrive at an average saving of more than twenty percent.

Footnote
The actual savings (the result when printing) depends on two factors:

  • the tonal-value increase (grid dot increase/dot widening) causes a decrease in the saving. The smaller the font size, the smaller the savings per letter. The choice of paper (substrate) also influences the TVI.
  • type and age of the printer used.
