Microsoft’s upcoming office suite, currently under development codenamed “Office 14,” will be called Microsoft Office 2010 upon release. Zdnet reports this based on an anonymous source within Microsoft.

The final designation for the office suite, which is expected to be released in March 2010, should also be apparent from a splash screen of a recent build of Office. It contains ‘Word 2010 – technical preview’. Microsoft refused to ZDnet to comment on the information.

By choosing the name Office 2010, Microsoft follows the pattern of its earlier versions; Office 11 was renamed Office 2003 and Office 12 was released as Office 2007 two years ago. For the Mac, Office 2001, 2004 and 2008 were released respectively.

Microsoft made Friday familiar that it will release Office 2007 SP2 this month for wsus customers. Presumably soon after, other users will also be able to download the second Office 2007 Service Pack. With SP2, among other things, Office documents can be saved in PDF and ODF format, the performance and stability of Outlook should be increased and it is possible with a tool to remove previous service packs.
