Sony will not release successors for Xperia X and X Compact

Sony stops its Premium Standard line of smartphones due to disappointing sales. In this line, devices were released that combined a high-end appearance at a price that was below that of the most expensive models, such as the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact.

Sony announced the news at an investor meeting. In future, the company will focus mainly on the high-end and also on the mainstream, no longer on the segment in between. In the current line-up it is about the Xperia XZ Premium and the XZs on the high-end and the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra on the midrange side, Xperia Blog writes.

The reason for the cancellation of upcoming Premium Standard models is that sales are disappointing. Globally, only 43 percent of the target sales for the Xperia X and X Compact were achieved. If home country Japan is not included, that is even 31 percent. The company’s strategy is to focus on its strengths with smartphones, such as camera technology and 4k displays.
