HP has announced two storage systems in the new StorServ line that the company has recently introduced. The P7200 and P7400 offer a maximum gross storage of 250 and 864 TB respectively and according to HP are now also economically interesting for SMEs.

The HP 3PAR StoreServ P7200 is equipped with two quad-core processors and two additional asic CPUs that should relieve the CPUs when, for example, making raid calculations. The system can drive up to 144 hard drives and 120 SSDs, while up to 24GB of cache memory is available. HP has equipped the StoreServ P7200 with twelve 8Gbps fiber channel connections and four iscsi ports. The P7200 can access up to 250TB, according to HP.

The StoreServ P7400 offers even more storage capacity and can control up to 480 hard disks and 240 SSDs. The cache memory can also be increased to 64GB and up to four hexacore processors. The P7400 can offer up to 864TB of storage.

In both StoreServ systems, HP uses the modular storage technology of 3PAR, acquired in 2010. By virtualizing each module, or “chucklet,” taking care of things like raid, a company would spend less time managing such storage systems. In addition, HP claims that the prices of 3PAR systems in the StoreServ line have fallen considerably with the introduction of the P7200 and P7400 and that this would also be a viable option for SMEs.
