AMD releases Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M and 6600M for laptops
AMD releases three Radeon RX 6000M video cards based on RDNA 2 GPUs for laptops. The Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M and 6600M are positioned opposite the laptop versions of Nvidia’s RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060.
The Radeon RX 6800M and RX 6700M are based on the Navi 22 GPU, which AMD also uses for its Radeon RX 6700 XT desktop graphics card. In both cases the chip is partially disabled, a maximum of 40 compute units are used. The RX 6600M has 28 compute units and is based on the smaller Navi 23 GPU, which has not yet been used in other products. The three laptop GPUs are equipped with GDDR6 memory.
AMD indicates that the RX 6800M in laptops will have a power target of 145 watts or higher. This GPU is therefore intended for the largest gaming laptops, with a considerable cooling capacity. The RX 6700M has a maximum power target of 135 watts and the RX 6600M has a maximum power target of 100 watts.
According to AMD, the RX 6800M is capable of running modern games in a 1440p resolution with frame rates averaging 120fps. The RX 6700M is aimed at that same resolution with frame rates of 100fps and the RX 6600M should be good for 100fps at full HD.
AMD shows its own benchmarks in which the RX 6800M is slightly faster than the RTX 3080 for laptops. For this test, AMD used an ASUS Rog Strix Scar 15 G533QS laptop in which the Nvidia GPU can consume a maximum of 130W. There are also RTX 3080 laptops in which the GPU can consume up to 150W.
Laptops with the RX 6800M and RX 6600M are available immediately, according to AMD. Models with the RX 6700M should follow ‘soon’. Along with the laptop GPUs, the AMD Advantage Design Framework has also been announced. AMD has set that up together with laptop manufacturers to create optimized gaming laptops with AMD hardware.
