Dead Space developer team working on horror game The Callisto Protocol
Survival horror game The Callisto Protocol, which will be released on consoles and PC in 2022, is being created by a team of some 25 developers who used to be involved in the Dead Space games. So says Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space, who is leading the project.
The Callisto Protocol is made by Striking Distance, it is the first game from the new studio where Glen Schofield is in charge. The studio is part of PUBG Corp. and the game will also be linked to the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds universe, but how that will turn out exactly is not yet known. Last year, the founding of the studio was announced and it was already reported that Schofield is working on a ‘narrative PUBG game’.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Schofield says the horror game revolves around an idea of his own and then with PUBG Corp. has been examined how a storyline of theirs can be applied there. While there is a link to the battleroyal game in terms of lore, gameplay is not. It is a single-player game in the survival horror genre and uses a third-person perspective.
The Callisto Protocol is a scifigame set on a moon of Jupiter in the year 2320. Players must escape the Black Iron Prison and discover “terrifying secrets” in the process. The game contains horror, action and story. According to Schofield, the game should set a new standard in the genre and the game will be reminiscent of the previous Dead Space games, which he made with Visceral Games for publisher EA. A team of some 25 developers who were involved in the creation of Dead Space are now working at Striking Distance on the new game.
The Callisto Protocol was announced earlier this month at the Game Awards. Only a cinematic trailer was shown. The game is still in its early stages of development. The game is due out sometime in 2022 and will be released for the Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 5 and PC.
