First MSI Afterburner update in two years, supports new GPUs

MSI Afterburner has been updated to support RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7900 GPUs. It is the first update of the popular overclocking tool in more than two years, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The developer of the tool is Russian.

In addition to supporting the new GPUs, brings the 4.6.5 update also support monitoring Intel Arc GPUs. However, these Intel GPUs are not yet overclockable via Afterburner. In addition, there is experimental support for thirteenth generation Intel and AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs. The hardware monitoring module also uses more data sources to display the CPU usage. The update also added other smaller features and fixed bugs.

The update is striking, as the development of the tool previously seemed to have been put on the back burner. Developer Alexey Nicolaychuk said early this year that he had worked on the software for 11 months without pay and that it didn’t look like he’d be getting any money anytime soon. MSI, on the other hand, said it would be difficult to pay the developer again, because of the sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Nicolaychuk remains the developer of Afterburner and also released this version of the tool, according to a post on the Guru3D forum. It is not clear whether the payment problems have been resolved. The last Afterburner update is from December 2021.
