Halo veteran Joseph Staten is working on a triple-A game for Netflix
Halo veteran Joseph Staten is joining Netflix to work on a new triple-A game. Staten started in 1998 at the then Halo developer Bungie and recently worked on Halo: Infinite. He left Microsoft earlier this month.
Joseph States reports that he will be working at Netflix Games as creative director for a ‘new triple-A game’. He also mentions that it is a game in a completely new franchise. According to Staten, it is a multi-platform game, but the Halo veteran does not say for which platforms the game will be released. Current Netflix games are available for Android and iOS, but job postings last year suggested that Netflix is also working on a triple-A game for PCs. The platform previously confirmed to be exploring cloud gaming for TVs and PCs as well.
The announcement follows after States earlier this month announced his departure from Microsoft. Staten worked at Bungie on the first three Halo games since 1998. Staten joined 343 Industries in 2013, a Microsoft studio that took over development of the Halo franchise. Staten recently worked on Halo: Infinite. Staten joined Microsoft’s Xbox Publishing division in January after the tech giant cut “at least” 95 jobs at 343 Industries.
Netflix started offering games on its platform in November 2021. The company currently does that for Android and iOS devices, although other platforms are also being considered. The streaming service is not sharing concrete numbers on how popular the games on its platform are currently, but said earlier this year against journalists from IGN, among others that in terms of user growth it is “very pleased” with the progress made so far. The company indicated in March that it will release 40 games on its streaming platform this year.
So today, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve joined @Netflix Games as Creative Director for a brand-new AAA multiplatform game and original IP. Let’s go! 2/2
