AMD also ‘helps’ manufacturers and web shops to stunt with prices of CPUs and GPUs

Last weekend we wrote on Tweakers that Nvidia is actively aiming for lower selling prices of video cards by financially compensating stores. AMD is now also applying similar tactics, sources in the market confirm to Tweakers.

Under the campaign name ‘Game on AMDstores can get a hefty discount on the purchase price of Ryzen 5000 processors and Radeon RX 6000 video cards, provided they place large enough orders. The aim of this is to increase the sales speed and thereby reduce the accumulated stocks to a healthier level. Especially in the high-end segment, there is a surplus of video cards, the exact reasons for which we further explored in the previously published article.

In practice, we see a lot of AMD processors falling in price in the Pricewatch. AMD naturally sells these to (web) shops, so that the action taken has an immediate effect. With video cards, there are individual manufacturers that use Radeon GPUs for their custom models. Those deals are therefore getting off to a slower start, although we are already seeing offers appear here and there.

A striking effect of AMD’s push is that an RX 6700 video card was for sale for a short time, without the XT suffix. AMD quietly released this new model last month, with fewer computing units and memory than the RX 6700 XT. However, the stock of that specific card has already run out.

So far, Alternate, Azerty, Informatique and Megekko are the Dutch stores that have committed to the sales promotion. According to AMD, the offers are valid until August 5, but an extension is not excluded. Below you can see a live overview of the most significant AMD processors and video cards that have fallen in price, from the Pricewatch. The listed starting price is always the lowest price for that product from 14 days ago.
