Chromebook shipments will drop 48 percent by 2022
The number of deliveries of Chromebooks in 2022 fell sharply compared to the previous year. This is a decrease of 48 percent. At least that is what the International Data Corporation reports on the basis of preliminary data from its Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.
Chromebook shipments fell 48 percent in 2022, after a massive 180.5 percent increase in 2021, writes Display Daily based on IDC data. If you zoom in purely on the past, fourth quarter of 2022, there were 3.6 million Chromebooks delivered. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, this is a decrease of 24.3 percent.
An IDC researcher says Chromebook shipments have been sluggish for several quarters, but shipments are expected to return to normal growth rates as inventory has now built up. However, it is expected that deliveries of Chromebooks outside the educational sector will remain a difficult story, given the economic downturn and possible alternatives such as tablets.
Reduced Chromebook shipments affected all major manufacturers, such as Acer, Dell, Lenovo, HP and ASUS. Based on the figures, Acer delivered the most Chromebooks with 4.2 million units in 2022, a decrease of 33.8 percent compared to 2021. The decreases are relatively larger at HP and Lenovo. These two companies delivered the most Chromebooks in 2021 with 10.2 and 8.2 million units respectively, but that dropped to 3.5 and 3.7 million last year.
