Google is testing feature in Chrome that can extend device battery life

Google is testing a new feature in the Canary and Dev versions of Chrome that the tech giant says can extend device battery life. The feature affects pages running in the background.

The ‘quick intensive throttling’ function should prevent background pages from eating too much battery life. Now, pages loading in the background in Chrome are delayed after five minutes. With the new feature, the JavaScript timers are already limited after ten seconds.

Google expects that this can extend the battery life of devices. The battery life extension will generally be applicable when multiple tabs are open at the same time and the page relies heavily on JavaScript.

Quick intensive throttling is currently only available in the developer versions of Chrome. It is not known when the feature will become available in the public version of the browser.
