Getty is suing Stable Diffusion maker for ‘misusing’ images for AI
Stock photo database Getty Images has sued Stable Diffusion maker Stability AI. Getty claims that Stability AI made unauthorized use of Getty’s images to develop the Stable Diffusion tool.
Stability AI makes according to Getty Images copyright infringement by Getty for using “millions” of Getty images in teaching Stable Diffusion. The AI developer would not have purchased the correct license from Getty for this, while Getty says it does offer it.
In return for The Verge says Getty Images CEO Craig Peters wanting to get clarity with the lawsuit about using copyrighted material for AI purposes. The AI developers often say that their use falls under fair use, while the rights holders usually disagree. Getty therefore says that it is not necessarily against such AI tools, but that it wants to clarify the legal framework.
Because of those copyright concerns, Getty previously banned the uploading of AI-created footage. Stability AI also recently made it possible for rights holders to opt out of Stable Diffusion, so that their work is no longer used to train the AI model. Stability AI does not yet want to comment on the lawsuit. Getty filed the lawsuit in the United Kingdom. earlier teamed up by three American artists filed a similar lawsuit, including against Stability AI.
