Apple introduces macOS 13. The new version of the operating system will be called Ventura and will be equipped with new multitasking functions. In addition, Spotlight gets new functions and the OS gets an option to use an iPhone as a webcam.

New in macOS Ventura is Stage Manager. That is a feature that shows apps and windows on the side of the screen, while the active apps are shown in the middle of the screen. In this way, according to Apple, users can more easily switch between different applications. The feature is enabled and disabled through Control Center.

Spotlight is also getting an update. This search feature allows users from macOS Ventura to search for images in their photo library, on their Mac, and on the web. It will also be possible to search for text in photos via the new Live Text API. The search function also gets the option to start timers, create new documents or enable a shortcut. Spotlight will now also display more information about films, TV series, actors and artists.

Apple also adds Continuity Camera to its operating system. This allows Mac users to use their iPhone as a webcam, with features such as Center Stage and iPhone portrait mode also working. The feature works with the primary camera and the ultra-wide-angle camera on the back of the iPhone. Handoff is also coming to FaceTime. This allows users to start a FaceTime call on a Mac and transfer it to an iPhone or iPad and vice versa.

The search function of the Mail app is also being updated, according to Apple. Users automatically see recent emails, documents, contacts, and links when they click the search bar in Mail. Users can now also schedule e-mails and withdraw sent e-mails, for example if users notice a typing error shortly after sending. According to Apple, the app also detects whether attachments or recipients are missing in the CCs. It will also be possible to schedule reminders for follow-ups.

Messages also gets the option to edit sent messages or withdraw them altogether, just like in iOS 16. When users share a file through Messages, they get the option to send a copy or “collaborate.” The latter option allows multiple users to make changes to the document. It will also be possible to create a shared photo library via iCloud. The Settings app is also being changed to be more similar to iPadOS and iOS.

Safari is getting a feature to share tabs with users, which also makes it possible to see in real time which tabs their friends are viewing. Safari is also getting support for biometric passkeys, rather than passwords. Major tech companies, including Apple, Google and Microsoft, announced earlier this month that they will support passwordless login on all their platforms.

Furthermore, Apple is also announcing a new version of its Metal API, which the company says is aimed at gaming. With this, the company introduces MetalFX Upscaling, which allows developers to render a game at a lower resolution and then scale it up to a higher resolution for better frame rates. The company refers to this as ‘temporal anti-aliasing’. Metal also gets a Fast Resource Loading API, which allows assets to be loaded faster from storage to the GPU. In addition, several new games are coming to Mac computers with an Apple Silicon chip: GRID Legends from EA and Resident Evil Village. No Man’s Sky is coming to Mac and iPads this year.

The first beta of macOS Ventura will be released on Monday. A full release of the OS is planned for this fall. The OS works on 2018 and later MacBook Air and Mac Mini models, 2017 and later MacBook and MacBook Pro models, 2017 and later iMacs and iMac Pros, and the 2019 Mac Pro.
