AMD introduces three new Ryzen 7000 CPUs with lower power consumption

AMD will release three new Ryzen 7000 processors on January 10. The Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 5 7600 have a TDP of 65W, much lower than the TDP of the existing models ending in an X. The more efficient CPUs are also cheaper and get a boxed cooler.

Of the new 65W chips AMD addresses one of the biggest criticisms of its Ryzen 7000 lineup: the rather outrageous power consumption. The top model, the Ryzen 9 7950X, consumed about twice as much as its predecessor in our review. It is precisely that top model that is the only existing CPU that is not currently getting a 65W version.

In a technical sense, you could say that the only difference with the existing CPUs is that the ‘eco mode’ is on by default; that slider in the Ryzen Master software can limit any Ryzen 7000 processor to a tdp of 65W. Incidentally, the processor can still consume more with a 65W TDP; the power limit with Ryzens is always at 135 percent of the tdp, in this case at 88W.

In terms of performance, the new chips will perform very similar to the existing models in eco mode; for the 7900X and 7600X we have already tested the impact of this in the review. In short, the processors will be slower especially in all-core workloads.

The processors will receive significantly lower suggested retail prices than the existing models, but because they have already been significantly reduced in price in a short time, the difference will probably amount to a few tens in practice. You do get a boxed cooler with the new chips, where all X models are now supplied without a cooler. The Ryzen 9 7900 and the Ryzen 7 7700 have a Wraith Prism with RGB lighting, the Ryzen 5 7600 has a simpler Wraith Stealth.
