ArtStation comes with an opt-out feature for AI tools to use images

Portfolio platform ArtStation unveiled an opt-out feature for all users on Friday. The platform claims that the feature should prevent artists’ work from being used without their permission by AI tools like Dall-E to generate images.

The NoAI feature allows users to add an HTML tag to individual projects that they don’t want to be used as a template in AI-generated images. Users can also use the feature to shield their entire portfolio through their account settings, writes ArtStation.

“We want to give artists more control over their published work. We introduced this because the use of AI and its place in copyright law is new and unclear. It raises questions about the enforceability of copyright against the use of art by artificial intelligence. By adding the NoAI tag, you can make it clear that the use of your work by AI tools is not allowed, regardless of the current copyright situation.”

The platform has changed its terms of service to prohibit the use of tagged art by all kinds of AI tools. However, it is not clear whether the tag will work right away or whether the developers of the AI ​​tools must first ensure that their software does not use the tagged images. It is also unclear how ArtStation will detect and enforce unauthorized use of the tagged work.
