Sony advises not to use ‘waterproof’ Xperia devices underwater
Sony recommends not to use Xperia devices underwater, even if this is possible according to the ip68 certificate. The Japanese company previously advertised the operation of some of its smartphones under water.
Users can use their Xperia device in wet environments, but Sony warns more than once not to use devices underwater on a dust and water resistance information page. The manufacturer specifically mentions taking pictures underwater as one of the scenarios that users should avoid, Xperiablog noted. On some product pages, Sony now mentions the new policy, while on others, such as that of the Xperia Z3, it still says that you can quietly dive into the water with the smartphone.
The warning contradicts previous marketing statements from Sony. The company advertised photos showing Xperia smartphones taking pictures underwater and being completely submerged. The extreme water resistance is one of the features with which Sony tries to distinguish the Xperia devices from the competition.
According to the ip68 certificate, which the last generation of Xperia devices has, devices must be able to withstand immersion deeper than one meter. Sony’s Xperias have to survive 1.5 meters in fresh water for a period of half an hour to get the certificate, but Sony’s explanation states that the devices have been ‘gently’ placed in the water. Sony emphasizes that the IP certification has been achieved under laboratory conditions in standby mode. It has therefore become unclear which use in combination with water is and which is not possible with the devices.
