Microsoft will no longer support the Authenticator application for Apple Watch from January 2023, according to a support page updated in late November. The company advises users to remove the application from their smartwatch.

According to Microsoft is the upcoming version of the security app for watchOS “not compatible with Authenticator security features”. Therefore, support for this version of the authentication app is ending. Microsoft will continue to support the mfa app for iOS and other devices.

On the same page, Microsoft advises users to remove Authenticator from the Apple Watch, as the app simply wouldn’t work after the upcoming update. The company refers to a Apple support page for instructions.

Microsoft recently expanded the functionalities of the mfa app to include number matching and more context for failed login attempts. From comments below accompanying blog post turns out Apple Watch compatibility was already absent back then.

Update, 9 p.m: The reason why Microsoft no longer supports the app in question has been worked out as much as possible.
