Adobe allows AI-generated images in Stock under certain conditions

Adobe has updated its guidelines to allow AI-generated royalty-free images to be added to Adobe Stock under certain conditions. For example, submitters must label all AI-generated content as such.

In the new guidelines, Adobe explains what requirements the images must meet and how the user submits them correctly. In addition to labeling the images, users must obtain permission from the owners of the reference images to use their material. In addition, the entrants need permission to use material depicting recognizable persons.

The photos must not contain “misleading or vague descriptions such as ‘3D render’, ‘wallpaper’ or ‘neural network’, unless the subject or style of the content is appropriate.” Furthermore, entrants must submit their work as illustrations, not photographs, even if the image is photo-realistic. As with regular images, Adobe promises compensation in the event of an intellectual property dispute.

Several stock photo companies have changed their guidelines over the past year due to the proliferation of AI-generated imagery. Getty Images has banned the uploading of images generated by artificial intelligence. According to Getty director Craig Peters, there are copyright concerns over such generated images and the site wants to protect its customers by banning AI images altogether. Shutterstock on the other hand, works with Dall E-maker OpenAI to sell AI-generated images.
