Gigapan has announced a new flagship in its Epic line of motorized panoramic camera mounts. The Epic Pro supports DSLRs weighing up to 4.5kg. The company has also renewed the Epic and the Epic 100.

Gigapan had already had motorized panorama mounts in its range for some time: the Epic and the Epic 100, but these only offered a stable panorama platform for compact cameras and small DSLRs up to a weight of 1.3 kg including lens, respectively. The Epic Pro, on the other hand, can handle cameras with a total weight of up to 4.5kg and is therefore suitable for the more professional SLRs and lenses. Gigapan has its Epic Pro pulled up of magnesium for the base and aluminum for the arms. The Epic Pro will be available in April for $895.

Gigapan has also updated its Epic and Epic 100 panorama confirmations. These are now smaller and have a stiffer aluminum chassis, better access to the battery, an LCD that can be switched off and a thirty percent lower energy consumption. The two new Epic models are available immediately. The Epic costs $349, while the Epic 100 is exactly $100 more expensive.

The motorized GigaPan tripod heads can rotate horizontally 360 degrees with a precision of 0.36 degrees, and can also automatically point the camera up and down to capture the entire environment. The unit is programmable, so that a series of photos can be reproduced exactly. Among other things, the rotation speed, the time between taking photos and the image overlap can be entered. The GigaPan Stitch software can stitch the photos into a large panoramic image.
