‘United Kingdom may ban Huawei from 5G network this year’

The British security service GCHQ is said to present the British Prime Minister this week with a report stating that Huawei will use untrusted technology. Due to recent US sanctions, Huawei can no longer use certain US chips.

The British newspaper The Telegraph writes that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will receive a report this week from GCHQ’s National Cyber ​​Security Center with a modified risk analysis of Huawei equipment. Since May, Huawei is no longer allowed to use chip designs made with US protected property. According to the NCSC, this has ‘serious’ consequences for Huawei, as a result of which the Center’s earlier risk analysis would no longer be correct.

Those chip sanctions would force Huawei to use “untrusted technology” in its network equipment. This would make it impossible for the NCSC to monitor the risk posed by Huawei equipment. Based on this report, Johnson would be “ready” to phase out the use of Huawei equipment this year, according to The Telegraph.

According to these new plans, not yet officially revealed, the British government will ban the installation of new Huawei equipment in the 5G network within six months. Equipment that is now used in the 5G network should be quickly replaced by equipment from other brands. Government officials would also look at the consequences of using Huawei equipment in the non-5G networks.

Within the British House of Commons, according to The Telegraph, there is a lot of distaste for Johnson’s dealings with Huawei and China. MPs would like Johnson to take tougher action against the company and the Chinese government. In January, Johnson authorized the use of Huawei equipment outside the 5G core network. The United Kingdom later turned out to exclude Huawei from the British telecom network from 2023. The US government in particular says that Huawei is spying for the Chinese government, although no evidence has ever been shown for this.
