According to a rumor, LG plans to release a smartphone with a rollable OLED screen early next year. The company is said to have started production of prototypes at its South Korean factory.

In the prototype, the screen can be rolled out to the side ‘when necessary’. LG is said to be working on the flexible OLED panel together with the Chinese screen manufacturer BOE. That is what The Elec claims, which claims to rely on information from sources within LG.

According to the sources, LG Electronics carries out the plans under the name Project B. The smartphone would be codenamed Rainbow. In May, information also came out about a device codenamed Wing, a smartphone with a tilting screen.

The electronics company would manufacture the Rainbow prototypes at its plant in Pyeongtaek. The roll-up screen smartphone should put LG back on the map as far as smartphones are concerned and boost morale within the company, according to the sources.

Earlier this year, TCL showed a prototype of a smartphone with a rollable screen and in 2014 there were already rumors that LG would be working on tablets with rollable screens. LG has now introduced a rollable television.
