LG Display is scaling up e-paper production
The display division of the South Korean company LG wants to start mass production of flexible e-paper displays before the end of the year. The company wants to produce the displays in screen diagonals of 9.7 and 19 inches.
The smallest flexible screen should be used in future versions of Amazon’s Kindle. The company already supplies the displays for the Kindle DX, which also comes with a 9.7″ e-paper display. The display can also be used in multimedia tablets, such as tells iSuppli’s Vinita Jakhanwal at PCWorld. LG’s e-paper screen can display colors, but the refresh rate is unknown.
The large screen is not able to display colors, but it is flexible, just like its smaller brother. With a thickness of 0.3 millimeters, the 19-inch e-paper display weighs only 130 grams and would also go into mass production before the end of the year. An application for the large e-paper displays is still difficult. They can be used in large electronic ‘newspapers’, but to take advantage of the flexibility of the screens, the associated electronics to control the pixels must also be mounted on a flexible substrate.
