Microsoft acquires IoT security company CyberX
Microsoft has acquired US company CyberX, which specializes in securing companies that use IoT devices on a large scale. Microsoft wants to integrate CyberX’s services into the security offerings offered through Azure.
The tech giant writes that it acquired CyberX to help Microsoft with two technical problems when it comes to the security of Iot devices. For example, Microsoft wants to be able to provide insight into which IoT devices are already connected to a network and it must be possible to manage the security of existing IoT devices. According to Microsoft, the latter is difficult because of a maze of different protocols.
CyberX is a security company that specializes in products for companies with large networks and who use many IoT devices. For this, the company says it has developed an agentless security system. According to Microsoft, CyberX allows customers to see thousands of connected IoT devices through a “digital map” and gather information about a device’s vulnerabilities. With this information, companies can understand where security risks could lie, Microsoft writes.
The company will now integrate the CyberX software into the Azure IoT security suite. How much Microsoft paid for CyberX is not clear. Sources report to TechCrunch that Microsoft has paid about 146 million euros for the security company. Microsoft announced in 2018 that it would invest $5 billion in the security and development of the Internet of Things.
