AFS is a distributed file system originally from Carnegie Mellon University. It was then further developed and published by Transarc Corporation, which in turn was acquired by IBM in the mid-1990s. In 2000, IBM released an open source version of AFS released, under the catchy name OpenAFS. For more information, please refer to this page. The developers of OpenAFS released version 1.7.8 for the Windows platform and version 1.6.1 prerelease 4 for all platforms a few days ago. The corresponding announcement looks like this:

OpenAFS 1.7.8 – Native File System client for Microsoft Windows available

OpenAFS 1.7.8 is the next in a new series of OpenAFS clients for the Microsoft Windows platform that is implemented as a native file system. Significant changes since 1.7.6

  • Improved compatibility with anti-virus and other anti-malware products.
  • Significant improvements in processor utilization and parallel processing.
  • BSOD issues fixed.
    • Avoid race during file control block deallocation.
    • Disable bug check in release builds. Too many out of memory conditions were triggering BSODs.
  • Deadlocks avoided
    • VolumeCB->ObjectInfoTree.TreeLock
    • ExtentsResource during CcPurge
  • Directory and file data synchronization errors fixed.
  • Permit rename of a file to itself without error.
  • Permit Explorer Shell to set UNIX mode bits.
  • Ignore AFS File Server file lock counts when deciding whether fail a lock request. File Servers prior to 1.6.1pre5 do not report accurate values.

All users of previous 1.7 releases should upgrade.

The 1.7 series is for Microsoft Windows only. The 1.7.7 release was not announced.

OpenAFS 1.6.1 prerelease 4 available

OpenAFS 1.6.1pre4 is the third prerelease for the 1.6.1 release.

1.6.1pre4 includes two fileserver fixes which will be required for 1.6.0 users to ensure replicated data consistency on the server. Sites not already running 1.6.0 should wait for 1.6.1 to upgrade fileservers. Additionally, updated support for Linux kernel versions as well as fixes to Rx idle connection and client NAT ping support are included.
