Sony PlayStation 5 gets a completely new user interface
Sony is thoroughly changing the interface of its console with the introduction of the PlayStation 5. That’s what the CEO of Sony’s design department says on LinkedIn. According to him, there are “virtually no pixels left” of the PlayStation 4 interface.
Matt MacLaurin, vice president of UX Design at PlayStation, answers some questions about the new console on LinkedIn. For example, someone asks if the user interface is being modified. MacLaurin answers in the affirmative: “Big time, we are obsessed with functionality. Few pixels remain from the PS4 generation”.
MacLaurin indicates that the new interface is mainly practical, but also gets a completely new look. The new PlayStation 5 OS is, according to the designer, ‘more subtle than flashy’. The design chief states that user experience and speed are the most important for the new interface. The targets set are measured in milliseconds.
Sony unveiled the appearance of the PlayStation 5 last week, but has not yet shown a new interface. In the stream, Sony showed a short teaser of the new interface. It only showed the PlayStation logo against a graphic background.
When asked if there will also be a black version of the console, MacLaurin answers: “Could be”, supplemented with a wink smiley. He also discusses the size of the console. The PlayStation 5 is big enough to keep the hardware cool. It has not yet been announced what the cooling will look like on the inside.
