EA is working on Lord of the Rings smartphone game
EA is working on the free-to-play smartphone game The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. The game is being developed by Capital Games, which also has the Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes smartphone game to its name.
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is announced to have a compelling story, turn-based combat, in-depth collecting systems, and many characters from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit universes. EA calls the game a collectible role-playing game and a “strategic, socially competitive experience.” Further substantive details about the game are unknown. In the summer, the game will be tested on a limited scale for the first time.
The title is made by Capital Games. That EA studio is also responsible for the smartphone game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. That free-to-play game has been available for iOS and Android since late 2015 and reached according to Sensor Tower in 2019 the threshold of one billion dollars in turnover.
Publisher EA has partnered with Middle-Earth Enterprises for the new Lord of the Rings game, which owns the worldwide rights to writer JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
EA wants to expand its range of mobile games and live services with the game. Such games are a major source of income for publishers. Last year, EA acquired the maker of smartphone game Golf Clash for $1.4 billion. The publisher also bought developer Glu Mobile for 2.1 billion dollars.
