Spread the love

The iSquint program can easily convert all kinds of video material on the Mac OS X platform to, among other things, the video format for the iPod. It has onboard support for files in DivX, XviD, 3GP or WMV formats, among others. For an overview of all possibilities, we refer you to this page. Version 1.4.1 has recently been released and has the following announcement featuring a short conversation between Timmy and Tyler:

Version 1.4.1:

This release handles MPEG-in-.mov files!
But Tyler…what’s a MPEG-in-.mov file?
Well, I’m glad you asked, Timmy.
An MPEG-in-.mov file is what you get when you save a .mpg file in a .mov container. It still plays back fine in QuickTime Player, but its convertibility is severely hurt. QuickTime Pro, iTunes, and Toast will try to convert the file, but you’ll end up with a silent clip. That’s no good. VLC and other tools will laugh at you. iSquint 1.4.1 will take your file and run with it. Audio and video intact.

  • MPEG-in-.mov files now supported. Very few converters, QuickTime-based or otherwise, can correctly deal with this type of file.
  • Replaced nearly the entire filenaming code to better handle non-standard characters.
  • Brought QuickTime decoding back to iSquint 1.3 speeds (still with 1.4’s brightness tweak).
  • Specifying a framerate in the Advanced drawer while using H.264 Encoding works again (did you even notice that it didn’t?).
  • Improvements to displaying the log file.
  • Fixed some 10.3.9 issues. What, are you guys waiting for? leopard?

Version 1.4:

Loop Deblocking will bring about world peace. Just you wait.

  • Big increase in H.264 encoding quality! H.264 encoding is now “worth it”.
  • Log file now available for last completed/failed video.
  • New build of ffmpeg. DV-in-AVI, Matroska, and AAC audio better supported.
  • Conversion from QuickTime sources now brighter (less “too dark”).
  • VCD .dat files authored in a certain way now detected correctly.
  • Cleanup of temporary audio after conversion works again.
  • More graceful cancel notification.
  • Polish localization by Lukasz Witkowski
  • Chinese Simplified localization now shows up as Simplified instead of Traditional.
  • Fixed a typo in the Help! menu. This is the most important thing in the entire update.
