Team Ninja Unveils Action RPG Rise of the Ronin for PlayStation 5
Team Ninja, the developer known for its action RPG games such as the Ninja Gaiden series and the game Nioh, has unveiled Rise of the Ronin. It is an action RPG set in a historical setting in Japan. The game will be released in 2024 for the PlayStation 5.
Team Ninja writes that players in the game take on the role of a ronin, a samurai who served no daimyo or any other master and is free to make his own choices. Rise of the Ronin is an open world combat-focused action RPG, according to the studio. Katana swords can be used in combat, but also firearms, for example.
The events are set in the late 19th century, at the end of the nearly 300-year-long Edo period, which ended in 1868. It is a dark period for Japan, given the civil war and deadly diseases, while Western influences are also making themselves felt.
The developer writes that apart from working out the action part, it does its best to create a layered story. Characters that players encounter all have their motivations and as a player you have the choice to join their side or the opposite. According to Team Ninja, those kinds of choices actually have an impact.
Team Ninja emphasizes that it has previously created titles based on periods of history and that Rise of the Ronin is taking “the next big step” in that area. The studio seeks to “deeply portray the most critical revolution in Japan’s history, including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many shy away from.”
