Samsung unveils mid-range Exynos 880-soc with 5g
Samsung has unveiled a midrange soc with 5G support. The specifications of the chipset are comparable to those of the high-end Exynos 980, but with, for example, more modest clock speeds. The soc is already in a midrange device from Vivo
The Exynos 880 has the same amount of cores as the 980, but clocked lower. The two ARM Cortex A77 cores run at 2GHz and the six A55 cores run at 1.8GHz, versus 2.2GHz and 1.8GHz respectively. The GPU is the same Mali-G76 MP5. In terms of display resolutions, this soc supports 2520 by 1080 pixels, which is also less than the 3360 by 1440 of the Exynos 980. The soc is made on the same 8nm finfet process.
The properties of the soc have also been scaled back with regard to camera sensors. The maximum here is a single 64-megapixel camera or two 20-megapixel cameras. The maximum video recording goes from 4k120 to 4k30. In terms of connectivity, support for Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, has been given up; so there is only support for Wi-Fi 5, or 802.11ac. However, the neural processing unit of the 980 is included.
The 5g modem is also present and supports the same frequency bands and speeds that the 980 has: up to 2.55Gbit/s at 5g, provided that it concerns frequencies lower than 6GHz. According to NDTV, the first phone with the soc will be released in China on June 1.
