Google is testing dark mode for search engine in Chrome on Android

Google is working on a dark mode for the search engine in Chrome on Android. Users can test the feature through Chrome Canary, or by modifying the end of the url. It is not clear whether the mode will also work for other browsers.

With the dark mode for the search engine, users no longer see the mostly white page when they open Google Search in Chrome. According to 9to5Google, Google had already posted a reference to the dark mode option in chrome://flags earlier this month. When this feature is enabled by the user in Chrome Dev or Canary, the Google Search URL will be followed by &cs=1. Until recently, however, the user did not notice any change, but was simply shown the regular search results page.

This week, Google seems to have enabled the feature, so dark mode now works. Since you only need to paste &cs=1 after the url to use the function, the dark mode also works in the regular Chrome version on Android. The function does not seem to work flawlessly, for example, the search bar turns white when searching for images, while it is simply black for all search results displayed.

Presumably Google eventually wants to make it possible for when the user has Chrome’s dark mode enabled, the search results will also be displayed in dark mode. It is not yet known when Google expects to make dark mode widely available.
