Sony acquires Savage Game Studios, starts working on PlayStation smartphone games
Sony acquires Savage Game Studios. This game developer will become part of PlayStation Studios and will work on smartphone games based on PlayStation franchises. It is not known how much Sony will pay for the studio.
PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst writes that the company reached ‘a final agreement’ to acquire Savage Game Studios. The studio joins PlayStation Studios’ new mobile division, which will “operate independently of the console division.” The studio will focus on “mobile experiences” based on new and existing PlayStation intellectual properties. Hulst says that the studio is currently working on a live service action game for smartphones. Savage CEO Mikhail Katkoff says the title is still in early development. The company has not yet shared any details about the upcoming game.
Savage Game Studios was founded in 2020 and is mainly focused on making games for smartphones. Headed by Mikhail Katkoff, Nadjim Adjir and Michael McManus, who have experience at studios such as Rovio, Zynga, Wargaming and Insomniac.
According to Sony, smartphone games will complement the PlayStation and PC games the company is working on. Hulst also reaffirms that it will continue to bring certain PlayStation exclusives to the PC. The company recently released Spider-Man for PC and has previously done the same with the likes of God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone and Death Stranding. The company said earlier this year that “half of all first-party PlayStation games” will be released for smartphones or PCs by 2025.
