Lucid introduces its own high-end EV sub-brand with Sapphire
The American car manufacturer Lucid has introduced a new sub-brand with Sapphire for high-end electric cars from its own stable. The Lucid Air will be the first car with a Sapphire badge. This EV gets a tri-motor system that can deliver 1200 hp.
The Lucid Air Sapphire gets the very first tri-motor system from the American car manufacturer. This system consists of two electric motors on the rear axle of the car in combination with a single electric motor on the front axle. By means of torque vectoring, the two rear motors can be controlled independently of each other and that must be done according to the car manufacturer improve the driving performance of the electric car. The Air Sapphire can develop 1200hp according to Lucid. That is more than the 1020 horsepower of the Tesla Model S Plaid. Lucid therefore claims that the Air Sapphire is the most powerful sedan in the world because of this.
In order to be able to deliver this performance, the design of the battery and the internal cooling of the same batteries have been overhauled, among other things. However, the car manufacturer does not state how much power the batteries have. The driving range is also not communicated. The manufacturer states that the Air Sapphire should be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under two seconds. The Air Sapphire gets a stiffer suspension, as well as an optimized ABS, stability control and electronic power steering system.
The body of the car is slightly wider at the front wheel openings, 22 millimeters to be exact. At the back, there is an additional 24 millimeters in width. As a result, Michelin’s new high-performance tires should fit better. Those tires also come with aerodynamic rims made of carbon that should help streamline the aerodynamics of the car. The interior of the car is also being overhauled. The seats are renewed and the interface of the infotainment system is expanded. That system includes new modes and menu options that match the Sapphire brand.
The American automaker will ask $ 249,000 for the Lucid Air Sapphire. The car will be available to order from August 23 in the United States and Canada. It is not clear whether the American car manufacturer will also release the car in Europe or other parts of the world.
