Ubisoft sues Apple and Google over Rainbow Six Siege clone in app stores
Ubisoft is suing Google and Apple for distributing an alleged clone of the popular Ubi game Rainbow Six Siege through their app stores. The French game publisher had asked if the game could be removed from their platforms, but this was refused.
The game is called Area F2 and is developed by Alibaba subsidiary Ejoy.com, Bloomberg writes. The game is “undeniably” an “almost one-to-one copy” of Rainbow Six Siege, according to Ubisoft. “Almost every element is inherited from R6S, from the operator select screen to the scoreboard at the end and everything in between”. The game has been available for a month now. It is unclear why the game is distributed on the platforms of Apple and Google under the name Qookka Games.
Why Ubisoft does not immediately go after Ejoy.com is not made clear. One possible reason is that that company is based in Hong Kong and such a copyright case has less chance of success there. If Ubisoft manages to remove Area F2 from the platforms through this route, it will still prevent the game from benefiting from Ubisoft’s work. The case has been brought in the US. Google and Apple did not comment on the matter at the time of Bloomberg’s publication.
