No longer available for purchases via eShop on Wii U and 3DS from March 27, 2023
As of March 27, 2023, it will no longer be possible to purchase games through the eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It was already known that Nintendo was going to do this, but no specific date had been mentioned yet.
Nintendo recommends customers to use up their credit in the older eShops before March 27, 2023, should they still plan to purchase digital Wii U and 3DS games. After that, it is no longer possible to make purchases or download free content. It is therefore no longer possible to make purchases via StreetPass Mii Plaza, the theme shop and the Nintendo Badge Arcade. It will still be possible to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates and play online on the Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo said.
Ancillary services are already being shut down earlier. For example, from 23 May 2022 it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add money to the account on the older platforms. Also, from August 29, 2022, customers will no longer be able to top up their credit in the Wii U and 3DS eShop with a credit card.
Although it will no longer be possible to top up credits from the end of August, users can still redeem valid download codes before the end of March 2023 to get games and DLC. In addition, users can merge their Nintendo Network ID credit, which is for the Wii U and 3DS eShop, with the credit associated with their Nintendo Account, which is used in the eShop on the Switch. This shared credit can be used to purchase games on Switch, 3DS and Wii U until March 27, 2023. After that, it can only be spent in the eShop on Switch.
