Fan Releases DirectX 12 Version of Super Mario 64
An unofficial, native DirectX 12 version of Super Mario 64 was released this weekend. The port can handle 4k resolutions and modern controllers like those of the Xbox One. It is unclear who made the Windows 10 version.
According to VideoGamesChronicle, the PC version was created by an unnamed fan, who used the game’s 2019 decompiled source code. The advantage of the native version is that it works at multiple resolutions, such as ultra-widescreen and 4k. The game has been released as an .exe file and can be played right away.
Super Mario 64 was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Although the game was developed for that console’s M-shaped controller, the recently released port can also work with modern controllers such as the Xbox One. Using software like Reshade, modern visual effects like bloom and raytracing could be used in the new version. Users do notice that the game does not work well at higher frame rates. A smooth experience with more than 60 fps as modern gamers are used to, is therefore not recommended with this port.
