OPPO reportedly wants to release first soc in two years
Smartphone maker OPPO reportedly wants to release its first soc for smartphones in two years. The processor should be ready next year. The manufacturer’s first npu was released this year.
OPPO would have the first processor made at 6nm at TSMC, reports ITHome. That should happen next year. The first soc for use in smartphones will follow in 2024. TSMC would make it at 4nm.
The manufacturer wants to start with processors and socs for cheaper models of its smartphones and only later want to compete with high-end socs. The manufacturer’s first neural processing unit, the MariSilicon X, is in the Find X5 Pro and helps with image processing, among other things.
OPPO has not responded to the information. The manufacturer has been working on its own chips for smartphones for several years, presumably to reduce its dependence on suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. Many more smartphone makers have their own chips.
