Epic Games is working on RealityScan app that makes 3D models with smartphone camera
Epic Games subsidiary CapturingReality has introduced RealityScan, an app that can convert photos from a smartphone camera into 3D models. The app has Sketchfab integration and is available as beta test for iOS devices. The app will also come to Android later.
Reality Scan allows users to scan an object, such as a chair, where users can see which parts of the object still need to be scanned by means of ‘AR guidance’. According to 9to5Mac an object needs at least twenty images to be able to scan it properly.
After collecting the images, RealityScan creates a 3d model, which can be uploaded to Sketchfab. Sketchfab is also part of Epic Games and has Unreal Engine plugins. Users can therefore create 3d models with a smartphone and use them for, for example, games in the Unreal Engine, as Epic also shows in the video below.
The RealityScan app has now been released through Apple’s TestFlight program, which allows 10,000 users to test a beta version of the app. A more extensive Early Access will be released this spring that can be used by more people. There will also be an Android version later this year. It is not clear what system requirements the app has.
CapturingReality says it has partnered with . for the app scanning company Quixel, which created scans used for movies and games. CapturingReality develops photogrammetry software and was launched over a year ago acquired by Epic Games.
