The Servo project to develop an independent browser engine has been hosted by Mozilla with the Linux Foundation. The project will have its own board and technical committee to determine the future of the engine.

The Servo Project reports that it has left the nest at Mozilla and found a new home at the Linux Foundation. Its own board and technical committee will determine the course, but the goal remains to develop a secure rendering engine with high performance, which can be integrated into applications by third parties.

The initiators call on developers to contribute and the aim is to start a membership for companies to secure the future financially. Servo is a rendering engine written in Rust for browsers, parts of which are integrated into the Gecko engine of Firefox. The project was started in 2013 by Mozilla Research and Samsung.

Earlier this year, Mozilla announced that the management of the programming language Rust would be housed in its own foundation. Mozilla has laid off hundreds of employees this year. At the beginning of this year, the reason given was that the development of successful paid services took longer than expected, and mid-year reference was made to the consequences of the corona crisis.
