Pine64 begins official sale of open source PineTime smartwatch
Pine64 has started official sales of its first smartwatch. The company previously made a developer version of this PineTime watch available, but is now releasing a variant for consumers.
Pine64 makes the release version of the PineTime available through its own webshop, where the company currently charges a $27 community price. The smartwatch has a touch-sensitive 1.3″ LCD with a resolution of 240×240 pixels. The whole weighs 38 grams. The smart watch runs on open source software as standard, in the form of Infini Time 1.2. Users can also flash an alternate OS.
In terms of specifications, the release variant is almost identical to the devkit. For example, the smartwatch has an nRF52832 soc from Nordic Semiconductor, with an Arm Cortex-M4F core at 64MHz. The smartwatch has 64KB of memory and 512KB of internal flash storage, which can be expanded with 4MB of additional storage. The PineTime also has a lithium polymer battery with a capacity of 170 to 180mAh. The open source watch supports Bluetooth 5 and features an accelerometer, a vibration motor and a heart rate sensor.
The housing of the release version has been changed. For example, the case can no longer be opened by the user, which was possible with the developer variant. As a result, users no longer have access to the low-level debug interface. As a result, users no longer have to assemble the smartwatch themselves. That was the case with the devkit. Pine64 is still selling the devkit, in the form of a twin pack along with a release variant of the watch.
