HiSense has announced a tablet with a 10.5″ screen, whose screen can only display grayscale. It is a monochrome LCD that works by reflecting natural light, which should improve battery life.

The tablet has been given the name Q5, and has so far only been announced for the Chinese market. According to Gizmochina, the tablet will have a so-called rlcd, or reflective liquid crystal display, which can only display grayscale. The housing is also in gray. Furthermore, the 10.5″ screen has a relatively low resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The screen has no backlight, but uses the reflection of incident light to show the image.

Despite the black-and-white screen, the Q5 runs Android 10, and an octa-core processor is built into the housing; a Unisoc Tiger T610. There is a 5-megapixel camera on the back, while there is a 2-megapixel camera on the front. There is 4GB of RAM and 64GB is built-in for storage.

Furthermore, the Q5 has a battery with a capacity of 5050mAh and a 3.5mm, HDMI and micro-USB port is built in. Up to two SIM cards can be inserted into the case for 4G connections. In China, the tablet will cost about 300 euros when sales start in June.

Last week, HiSense already announced a series of smartphones that have an E Ink screen. Two of those devices can also display colors. Just like the Q5 tablet, the smartphones are mainly announced for the Chinese market.
