The open source zfs file system was originally developed by Sun for Solaris, but in 2013 a number of developers founded OpenZFS to ensure further development. The file system is currently officially supported on Linux and FreeBSD. It includes methods to prevent data corruption in both the data and metadata, provides data redundancy via raid-z and saves space by transparently compressing the data.
