Intel’s 10nm+ processor Tiger Lake is coming to laptops mid-year
Intel is set to release its Tiger Lake generation of laptop processors by the middle of this year. This concerns the successors of the Ice Lake CPUs for laptops. The new processors are made on a 10nm+ process. There should be 50 Tiger Lake laptops by the end of this year.
According to Intel CEO Bob Swan, there will be a choice of more than fifty laptops based on the new processors during the holidays this year. Furthermore, the CEO indicates that Intel still expects to deliver the first 10nm server processors by the end of this year. These are Xeon Scalable processors based on Ice Lake. Intel CEO Bob Swam mentioned the details when discussing the quarterly figures. A transcript of this can be read at Seeking Alpha.
At the beginning of this year, Intel already gave details about its Tiger Lake processors. These are economical chips intended for thin laptops, for which Intel now has the Ice Lake series. The Ice Lake CPUs are made at 10nm and for Tiger Lake Intel uses a 10nm+ process, which should bring performance improvements. The Tiger Lake CPUs also get a Xe GPU. This makes them the first products to use Intel’s new GPU architecture. Later, Intel will also release separate video cards based on the Xe architecture.
Intel says production will not be hindered by the corona crisis. That was the case at the beginning of this year, but production has now been scaled up again. Swan also says Intel is on track to increase wafer capacity to make enough chips to meet demand. Intel has been dealing with shortages for a long time, due to the high pressure on its 14nm process. According to Intel, demand for PCs has continued to increase as many people now work from home and classes and lectures are conducted online. How that will be in the second half of this year is uncertain according to the manufacturer.
Intel’s quarterly revenue was $19.8 billion, up 23 percent from the same quarter last year. The Client Computing Group, which includes consumer processors, had sales of $9.8 billion, an increase of 14 percent. Big growth was made by the Data Center Group, which achieved quarterly revenue of $7 billion, 43 percent more than a year earlier. Net income was $5.7 billion, up 42 percent from last year’s first quarter earnings.
