HBO’s The Last of Us TV Series is likely to be released in 2023
HBO’s TV series based on The Last of Us isn’t coming out this year. That’s what Casey Bloys, the company’s chief content officer, said in an interview. HBO would instead aim for a 2023 release.
Bloys confirms to Deadline that there is currently still filming in Canada, which was already known. He also says that the series will therefore not appear this year. “It will not air in 2022. I think you will see the series in 2023,” Bloys told the entertainment news site.
Bloys does say that he has seen a number of early episodes and that he is “very excited” about their progress. “Craig (Mazin, ed.) has done Chernobyl for us; he’s a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks great. So I’m excited about it, but it won’t be in 2022.”
HBO officially gave the Last of Us series the green light at the end of 2020. The series is based on the PlayStation game of the same name and is shot in Alberta, Canada. Filming should be completed by June. Last year it was announced that Joel will be played by Pedro Pascal, known from The Mandalorian and Narcos, among others. Bella Ramsey, who previously played Lyanna Mormont from HBO’s Game of Thrones, takes on the role of Ellie. The first season will consist of ten episodes. Although filming has not yet been completed, HBO already shared a first atmospheric photo of the series last year.
