The source code of the Valve games Counterstrike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress has appeared online. It concerns source code from a few years ago, but nevertheless various communities around the game already recommend not to play online until any exploits have been closed.

It concerns the source code that Valve makes available to ‘source code licensees’, reports SteamDB. The fear is that by making the source code available, malicious people can develop better cheats or create exploits that exploit vulnerabilities in the source code to penetrate users’ PCs.

Communities around the games such as Creators.tf have already taken servers offline and are advising players not to play the games online for a while. Creators.tf says it has taken the measure “for the foreseeable future” and gives no indication when the servers will come back online. Valve has not yet responded to the release of the source code. It is also not yet known exactly how this could have happened.
