Zoom has announced version 5.0 of its app, which includes many changes to the security of video conferencing. For example, Zoom has applied a better encryption algorithm and admins can set how data traffic is routed.

Zoom will soon use aes 256-bit encryption with gcm, the company writes. Gcm support is in updates for all clients and will be available for all accounts at once on May 30th. The reinforced encryption should provide better security. After the update, admins can also set per group or per individual where the data traffic goes. That goes by region.

In addition, there will be an option for admins to report users to Zoom for abuse; this should prevent ‘zoom-bombing’, whereby strangers enter the call and misbehave. In addition, Waiting Room, a waiting room for users who want to join a meeting, is now enabled by default for many conversations. This should also prevent ‘zoom-bombing’. The update is now available for desktop through the company’s site.

Zoom has taken a three-month period to improve the security and privacy of its service. The company decided to do so after many security leaks in the service came out within a short time.
