Capcom confirms that it has been affected by ransomware and reports leaked data

Gamemaker Capcom confirms that it has been affected by ransomware. The company reports that various data was leaked in the cyber attack, including personal data and plans for future games.

Capcom reported earlier this month that it was hit by a cyber attack on November 2, but did not share details at the time. The game maker has since reported a ransomware attack. Among other things, personal data was leaked. The company speaks in a statement about a ransomware organization that calls itself ‘Ragnar Locker’.

The company has since confirmed that the data of nine (former) employees has been leaked with the ransomware infection. The likely size is likely to be considerably larger. Capcom talks about 350,000 potentially leaked data on its website. This includes, for example, information about customers and shareholders of the company, including names, email addresses, telephone numbers and dates of birth. Internal documents have also been leaked.

Capcom writes that the amount of data compromised cannot be accurately determined because some logs were lost due to the ransomware infection. The company further states that no financial data from customers has been stolen.

In addition to the personal data, several details about upcoming Capcom games have also been published, Eurogamer writes. For example, according to internal documents, Resident Evil Village is scheduled for ‘the end of April 2021’. That game doesn’t officially have a release date yet; Capcom previously only reported that the game will be released next year. It is not clear how recent this information is, so there is a chance that Capcom has postponed the planned release.

Resident Evil Village is also referred to as a cross platformer. For example, a PS4 version is specifically mentioned, GamingBolt writes. Capcom previously announced that it is ‘considering’ releasing the game for current-gen consoles, but that has not been officially confirmed.

The game maker is also reportedly working on a new title for the Nintendo Switch called Guillotine. Few details about this game are currently available. Capcom would also work on an online multiplayer shooter called Shield, with a first free version to be released in September 2021. A full, paid variant is to follow in March 2022, according to documents that on Twitter have been published.

Also mentioned are plans for a new Ace Attorney collection for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch, Resident Evil 4 for Oculus VR headsets and a PC release of Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2.

Not all of the stolen data may have been published by the criminals behind the ransomware infection. The BBC writes that the Ragnar Locker website states that Capcom “did not make the right choice to protect data from leakage.” This would suggest that the Japanese company has not paid a ransom.
